How to Use the Environmental Stewardship Resource Guide

There are two ways you can use the Environmental Stewardship Resource Guide (ESRG):

NAVIGATING THROUGH THE ESRG AS A RESOURCE GUIDE

Each section below is organized by the information for which you are responsible in your position at work:  program and resource managers, purchasing managers and bankcard holders, contract and grant managers, and federal facility and fleet managers. The Every Person section gives you information to use at work, at home, and in your community. You may have responsibilities in more than one area.

Who are you?

  • Every Person: Every individual in the federal government.

  • Program and Resource Managers: Anyone in the federal government who oversees resources, programs, or staff, from administrative assistants to team leaders to office directors.

  • Purchasing Managers and Federal Bankcard Holders: Anyone responsible for buying products or services for a federal agency.

  • Contract and Grant Managers: Anyone who has a part in the federal government’s contracts, blanket purchase agreements, grants, or cooperative agreements.

  • Federal Facility and Fleet Managers: Anyone who manages one of the federal government’s facilities, environmental services, or transportation programs.

Within each area, you will find specific information on how, where, and why to implement environmentally preferable actions, including:

  • What federal requirements exist?
    • Regulations, contracts, executive orders, policy.
  • What actions can I take?
    • Specific actions to satisfy requirements and policy.
  • Which resources are available?
    • Where to go to develop and implement the actions.
  • What training is available?
    • Determine what the appropriate training is for you.
  • How is EPA making strides?
    • Accomplishments and programs already in place.
  • What are other agencies doing?
    • Other examples of what can be done.

The ESRG is a portal; selected information within these topics opens links to sites on the Internet. You must be connected to the Internet to access the selected information outside the ESRG.

Start your navigation of the ESRG at the Stewardship by Roles or the Home page.

USING THE ESRG AS A TRAINING TOOL

The ESRG can be used as a training tool integrated into your agency’s Environmental Management System, facility operations, environmentally preferable purchasing program, or general individual environmental stewardship. It is designed to give the user a sense of ownership and community by including sections on individual, as well as community actions.

The information in the ESRG can be used as a knowledge base for periodic training and to create exams or quizzes. The ESRG was created in an open HTML format to make it easy for anyone to add specific information using a program such as “Dreamweaver.”

Environmental Stewardship at My Agency outlines a process by which community support can be built within a workplace and a Green Team established to help lead the effort to have everyone practice environmental stewardship.

Additional Materials

Additional materials are available to help you reach out to all people who need to be involved in environmental stewardship. The presentations can be adapted for your own agency.

  • Introductory Brochure (4pp, 280KB, About PDF) – This two-page double-sided brochure is an overview of the ESRG, explains how to use it, and has a number of quick references and a short quiz. It should be used to introduce the ESRG to people in your agency.

  • Fact Sheets – These one-page, double-sided fact sheets are used to introduce people in each of the five areas to a quick overview of what is required, what actions they can take, a number of quick references they can use, and a short quiz.
