Environmental Stewardship for Purchasing Managers and Federal Bankcard Holders

Whatever your job, it is likely that you will be asked to order a product that has been designated as environmentally preferable.

  • Supply clerks, secretaries and administrative officers order copy paper, file folders, remanufactured toner cartridges, writing tablets, envelopes, plastic office supplies, shipping and mailing products, awards and plaques, and other products we typically use every day.
  • Fleet managers and users of fleet vehicles purchase automotive products such as motor oil, tires and engine coolant.
  • Employees in facilities or safety and environmental compliance may buy signs, pallets, parking stops, traffic cones, and barrels to control traffic flow in parking lots; park benches and picnic tables; and certain other building and landscaping products.

You have the responsibility to help the environment while
buying products that meet your program’s needs.

What Are My Responsibilities?
Environmentally Preferable Purchasing

When making purchasing decisions, choose environmentally preferable options whenever available. Green purchasing requirements apply to all federal agencies and their contractors. Government purchasers should buy products that cause minimal impact on the environment and human health.

Efficient and Renewable Energy
Electronics Purchasing

Purchase computers and other electronic equipment with environmental attributes. All federal agencies should commit to buying electronic equipment that reduces the use of environmentally sensitive materials, is designed for end-of-life recycling, and contains energy conservation features.
