The Awards page lists sources of environmental awards offered by Federal and State government and non-profit organizations. The list is arranged by media type and/or by agency or region.

General
GSA established this award to motivate federal agencies to improve real property management. The program recognizes an agency's success and communicates cutting-edge ideas to agencies striving to improve their real property asset management. GSA focuses on two topic areas for the award program: Asset Management and Sustainability.
The primary goal of this program is to recognize the variety of existing accomplishments and excellence provided by environmental practitioners in adhering to the principles of the National Association of Environmental Professionals (NAEP). The NAEP National Environmental Excellence Award competition is not a membership oriented competition and is expressly created to consider nominations from all interested environmental professionals, their agencies, companies and so forth from across the country. The awards are presented during the annual March NAEP conference. Nominations are typically due the end of September.
Agency-Specific
The GDI Awards are a collection of four honors created in 2011 to recognize employees and teams that go above and beyond to help the State Department lead by example on the environment and reduce our global footprint. Every year, the Department awards them on Earth Day.
The objectives of the Secretary of the Army Energy and Water Management Award Program are to recognize the energy and water conservation achievements and programs of individuals, small groups, and garrisons and to provide an added incentive to further reduce energy and water consumption.
Each year, the Army recognizes and rewards excellence in the development, management and transferability of environmental programs that increase environmental quality, enhance the mission and keep the Army sustainable. The Secretary of the Army (SecArmy) Environmental Awards category winners go on to compete in the Secretary of Defense (SecDef) Environmental Awards Program.
Acquisition
The EPEAT Purchaser Awards recognize excellence in green procurement of electronics. EPEAT Purchasers earn a star for each product category for which they have a written policy in place that requires the purchase of EPEAT registered electronics.
Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council's (SPLC) awards case studies from public and private sector organizations who demonstrate overall sustainable purchasing.
Air Emissions
The Awards Program annually recognizes and honors both individuals and organizations that have undertaken the risks of innovation, served as pioneers in their fields, and have helped to improve air quality.
The Climate Leadership Awards is a national awards program that recognizes and incentivizes exemplary corporate, organizational, and individual leadership in response to climate change. The winners are leading the way in managing and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in their operations and supply chains.
Cultural Resources
The AASLH conducts its Annual Awards Program to establish and encourage standards of excellence in the collection, preservation, and interpretation of state, and local history throughout North America.
Presented by the National Trust, it is given to individuals and organizations whose contributions demonstrate excellence in historic preservation.
Section 110(h) of the National Historic Preservation Act establishes the Secretary of the Interior annual award program to recognize the outstanding contributions in historic preservation. The Secretary's award is distinguished from other historic preservation award programs because it: is statutorily mandated as a Cabinet-level recognition; focuses on the accomplishments of individual employees whose work enhanced and/or improved historic preservation in their agency, state, tribal, or local government; and recognizes the contributions of employees at multiple levels of government. The Secretary may present up to four awards annually, one for each level of government participating in the national preservation partnership program (federal, state, Tribal, and local) and each comes with a special citation and $1,000.
The Society for American Archaeology Awards recognize and honor knowledge and professional achievements at all career levels--from student and early career archaeologists to those who have made lasting contributions to the Society and the profession. The Call for Nominations opens in the fall of each year.
Energy
This award recognizes leading companies and organizations for their outstanding contributions to environmental protection and energy efficiency through their partnerships with ENERGY STAR.

Each year the U.S. Department of Energy, in conjunction with the Federal Interagency Energy Policy Committee ("656" Committee), sponsors the Federal Energy and Water Management Awards. These awards honor individuals and organizations making significant contributions to the efficient use of energy and water resources in the Federal government.Awards recognize outstanding achievements in the following areas:
  • Conservation and efficient use of energy and water New and emerging energy technologies
  • Innovative strategies, best practices, and applications
  • Renewable energy sources
  • Alternative financing
  • Energy-efficient mobility by the Federal government
Green Buildings
The annual awards are based on published criteria approved by the CMRA Board of Directors and are intended to highlight and provide distinction to those that have accepted the challenge to define and expand the industry served by the CMRA. The four awards are:
  • Facility of the Year is for recognition of a facility that is actively recycling or diverting construction and demolition materials from landfills. The facility must show substantial contributions to the C&D recycling industry.
  • Recycler of the Year is for recognition to an individual in the construction and demolition recycling industry who has made superior and substantial contributions to his/her company or industry in achieving sound operating practices, including marketing materials.
  • Governmental Recycling Program of the Year is for recognition to a public sector recycling program that provides substantial contributions in construction and demolition recycling.
Natural Resources
The Gulf Guardian Awards were created in 2000 by the partnership of the Gulf of Mexico Program to recognize environmental excellence in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. Award categories are: Business, Government, Civic/Nonprofit Organization, Youth/Education, Partnerships, and Individual.
The Foundation has three annual awards to recognize outstanding achievements in the renewable resources fields. The Sustained Achievement Award recognizes a long-term contribution and commitment to the protection and conservation of natural resources by an individual. The Outstanding Achievement Award recognizes a project, publication, piece of legislation, or similar concrete accomplishment that occurred during the three years prior to nomination for the award. (An individual cannot receive this award.) RNRF's Excellence in Journalism Award, established in 2001, honors and encourages excellence in print journalism about natural resources.
The awards program of the Soil and Water Conservation Society is designed to recognize individuals and organizations who have made outstanding contributions in advocating the conservation of soil, water and related natural resources.
Pollution Prevention
The CHALLENGE was established to recognize and promote fundamental and innovative chemical methods that accomplish pollution prevention through source reduction and that have broad applicability in industry.
Each year EPA recognizes Safer Choice Partner of the Year award winners across the nation for achievement in the design, manufacture, selection, and use of products with safer chemicals.
Recycling
The annual awards are based on published criteria approved by the CMRA Board of Directors and are intended to highlight and provide distinction to those that have accepted the challenge to define and expand the industry served by the CMRA. The four awards are:

Regional
The California Environmental Protection Agency and its boards, departments, and offices recognize agencies, local governments, small businesses, and individuals for their outstanding achievements in environmental protection. Listed below are these awards.
EPA Region 1's program to honor those who have exemplified true leadership in protecting public health and New England's environment.
EPA Region 7 established the L.E.A.F.S. award to recognize those who have supported the Superfund Redevelopment Initiative through innovative thinking, sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. Region 7 is a highly rural region with lots of available greenspace. Many opportunities exist to revitalize these sites through creative thinking and environmental awareness. Sites that are successfully reused can benefit communities, developers, site owners, and local governments. These sites can also be redeveloped in a way that enhances the remedial actions taken and supports stewardship of the land. This award was established to recognize any and all of these outstanding efforts.
The award recognizes facilities who demonstrate excellence in operation, maintenance, innovative treatment, waste reduction and pollution prevention, conservation, recycling and other special achievements.
This program seeks to recognize entities (businesses, governmental units, schools and other organizations) who act proactively, make decisions and engage in activities that enable them to reduce their environmental impacts. The categories include Energy/Renewable Resources, Greening the Government, Land Use, Outreach or Education, Pollution Prevention/Source Reduction, and Recycling/Reuse.

The awards recognize outstanding, innovative environmental programs in 10 diverse categories: Agriculture, Civic/Nonprofit, Education, Government, Small Business, Large Business/Nontechnical, Large Business/Technical, Innovative Technology, Individual and Youth.
Sustainability
The Federal Green Challenge is a national effort under US EPA's Sustainable Materials Management Program, challenging EPA and other federal agencies throughout the country to lead by example in reducing the Federal Government's environmental impact. Federal Green Challenge (FGC) awards are offered in three categories – data driven, narrative, and adaptation. Data driven awards are in the target areas of Waste, Electronics, Purchasing, Energy, Water and Transportation. Narrative awards are given in the categories of Innovation, Education & Outreach and Leadership.
The Millennium Awards were established in 1996. The Awards were designed to honor individuals and organizations who recognize the important connection between humankind and nature, to celebrate their success and inspire others to make such exceptional behavior the norm.
GSA established this award to motivate federal agencies to improve real property management. With this award EPA seeks to recognize and support public entities (from cities to state governments and the many types of public entities in-between) that promote and achieve smart growth, while at the same time bringing about direct and indirect environmental benefits. 2015 was the last year this award was given.
P3 is the next step beyond P2 (pollution prevention) and focuses on the three components of sustainability: People, Prosperity and the Planet. This national student design competition will enable college students to research, develop and design sustainable solutions to environmental challenges.
This award honor the groups that develop significant brownfields sites across the country. The awards categories are: regional awards, community impact, special innovations, people's choice, and international.
The Presidential Federal Sustainability Awards Program celebrates the extraordinary leadership, innovation, and achievement of Federal agencies and their employees toward the President's charge for Federal climate action and the ambitious sustainability goals established in the Federal Sustainability Plan and Executive Order 14057. Federal programs, projects, project teams, facilities, and individuals are eligible for nomination by their agency.

Water
The Advocacy Recognition Program highlights outstanding advocacy work undertaken by federal elected officials and NACWA Member Agencies to further municipal clean water priorities. Honorees will be identified for recognition and nominated by the Association's Government Affairs Group and Management Team. NACWA's Legislative & Regulatory Policy Committee will consider the nominations and select honorees for recognition. Federal elected officials will receive recognition at the National Water Policy Fly-In and Member Agencies will be recognized during NACWA's Utility Leadership Conference.
