DOE published the "2023 Better Buildings Initiative Progress Report," which summarizes the achievements of DOE's Better Buildings public and private sector partners since the initiative's inception in 2011. The report shows that partnering entities, including more than 900 businesses, state and local governments, utilities, housing authorities, and other public and private organizations, to date have collectively saved $18.5 billion through efficiency improvements and cut harmful carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 190 million metric tons-- an amount roughly equivalent to combined annual emissions of 24 million homes. This report also includes the results of the Better Climate Challenge, an initiative that challenges major building portfolio owners and industrial partners to cut their greenhouse gas emissions by 50% within 10 years. In year one of the Challenge, partners have reported on nearly 1 billion square feet of buildings and 1,500 industrial plants. Through the Better Buildings Initiative, DOE aims to improve energy efficiency in the commercial, industrial, and residential sectors and accelerate cost-effective decarbonization solutions across the economy--supporting the Administration's efforts to lower energy costs for American families and businesses while addressing the climate crisis.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced a commitment from over 90 companies and organizations to reduce their carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 through DOE’s Better Climate Challenge. This national public-private partnership calls on organizations across the country to set bold, portfolio-wide greenhouse gas reduction targets and share their innovative solutions and best practices with partners and across industries. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced the launch of a new online collaboration tool and data resource focused on bioenergy. The "Bioenergy Knowledge Discovery Framework" allows researchers, policymakers, and investors to share large data sets, as well as the latest bioenergy research. The Framework also facilitates collaborative production, integration, and analysis of information. Registered users will be able to contribute additional data sets that can then be shared, growing the body of knowledge, better informing this growing industry, and eliminating "information silos." The Framework allows simultaneous geographic mapping of complex data sets such as biomass feedstock production, fueling stations, and biorefineries on a national, state, and even county-level basis – providing the bioenergy industry an analytical tool for identifying new opportunities for research, supportive policies, and project investment. The Framework is part of the Obama Administration's commitment to developing homegrown, sustainable, and plentiful sources of clean energy, like biofuels.

DOE's Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) was recognized by the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) with Green Zia Environmental Leadership Program (GZELP) Gold Level membership for excellence. The GZELP annually recognizes organizations and businesses for their demonstration of environmental leadership in support of pollution prevention and sustainability. The Gold Level is the highest GZELP recognition. WIPP was chosen by the NMED as a Silver Level Leader in 2012 and Bronze Level Leader in 2011. The NMED, the state regulatory agency, selected WIPP based on continuing environmental achievements, including hazardous waste reduction, energy conservation and pollution prevention.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today selected Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to receive up to $6?million to help expand the deployment of geothermal heating and cooling technology at federal sites. The federal government is the nation’s largest energy user, consuming nearly 1% of all end-use energy in the United States. Installing these carbon-free heating and cooling systems at federal sites will support President Biden’s goal to make the federal government carbon-neutral and help demonstrate the benefits and potential of this technology.

The DOE selected 19 projects, with a total funding of $6 million, that will pursue innovative, targeted, early-stage ideas in solar energy research and development. These projects, representing 13 different U.S. states, will support President Biden's goal of addressing the climate crisis by driving innovation and speeding clean energy deployment to achieve a carbon-free electricity sector by 2035 and net-zero emissions energy sector by 2050. The projects were selected through the Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) Small Innovative Projects in Solar (SIPS) 2022 Funding Program. SIPS projects focus on novel, high-risk, or high impact ideas that can produce significant results within the first year of performance, quickly validating new concepts and laying the foundation for continued research. SIPS is an ongoing SETO program that has funded more than 100 projects since it began in 2015.

(Washington, D.C. - November 12, 2011) The U.S. Department of Energy today announced the establishment of the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Advisory Committee (ERAC). ERAC is a federal advisory committee whose members will report directly to the Secretary of Energy with advice on the portfolio of the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). The 19 members selected have experience in a variety of sectors and will bring a range of technical expertise and perspectives to the committee.

EPA's Green Power Partnership works with a wide variety of leading organizations -- from Fortune 500® companies to local, state and federal governments, and a growing number of colleges and universities. Usage figures are based on annualized Partner contract amounts (kilowatt-hours), not calendar year totals. These rankings are updated on a quarterly schedule.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) released a study showing that by 2030, nearly half of medium- and heavy-duty trucks will be cheaper to buy, operate, and maintain as zero emissions vehicles than traditional diesel-powered combustion engine vehicles. Published by the DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the study finds that continued improvements with zero emission vehicle and fuel technologies will enable clean trucks to become cheaper and more readily available over the next decade. Increased use of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) within the trucking industry will support the decarbonization of America's transportation sector and advance President Biden's goals to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles, address the climate crisis, and bolster domestic manufacturing.

DOE has released a notice of intent to issue the "Assisting Federal Facilities with Energy Conservation Technologies (AFFECT) 2020" Federal Agency Call, which will help fund the development of federal energy efficiency, resilience, and security projects that use energy performance contracting

This publication states that a Zero Energy Building is "an energy-efficient building where, on a source energy basis, the actual annual delivered energy is less than or equal to the on-site renewable exported energy." This definition also applies to campuses, portfolios, and communities. In addition to providing clarity across the industry, this new DOE publication provides important guidelines for measurement and implementation, specifically explaining how to utilize this definition for building projects.

(October 7, 2010) U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced today the release of a report from the Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), which comprehensively analyzes the key factors impacting the deployment of offshore wind power in the United States. The report, "Large-Scale Offshore Wind Power in the United States: Assessment of Opportunities and Barriers," includes a detailed assessment of the nation's offshore wind resources and offshore wind industry, including future job growth potential. The report also analyzes the technology challenges, economics, permitting procedures, and the potential risks and benefits of offshore wind power deployment in U.S. waters.

Executive Order (E.O.) 13514 requires Federal agencies to reduce petroleum fuel use by 2 percent each year from 2005 through 2020, for a total 30 percent reduction. This new fleet guidance highlights a number of ways Federal agencies can reduce petroleum consumption by reducing vehicle miles traveled, increasing fleet fuel efficiency and switching to lower GHG-emitting and alternative fuels.

The Innovative Grid Deployment Liftoff report is focused on identifying pathways to accelerate deployment of key commercially available but underutilized advanced grid solutions on the existing transmission and distribution system to address near-term hotspots and modernize the grid to prepare for a wide range of energy futures.

This new DOE report, "Hydropower Vision: A New Chapter for America's First Renewable Electricity Source," looks at the future of hydropower through 2050. According to the report, with continued technology advancements, innovative market mechanisms, and a focus on environmental sustainability, hydropower in the United States could grow from 101 gigawatts (GW) to nearly 150 GW of combined electricity generation and storage capacity by 2050. Achieving this growth would help advance America's low-carbon economy and leverage renewable energy sources.

DOE has released the latest version of its building energy modeling software EnergyPlus, which calculates the energy required to heat, cool, ventilate, and light a building. EnergyPlus is used by architects and engineers to design more efficient buildings, by researchers to investigate new building and system designs, and by policymakers to develop energy codes and standards. The advanced physics calculations within EnergyPlus allows it to model a wide range of residential and commercial buildings and HVAC system types, including passive building designs and low-energy systems.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) released QTR 2015 that describes the current energy landscape, the potential for improvement in systems and technologies, and a wide-ranging set of related research, development, demonstration, and deployment (RDD&D) opportunities.

The DOE released the Solar Futures Study detailing the significant role solar will play in decarbonizing the nation’s power grid. The study shows that by 2035, solar energy has the potential to power 40% of the nation’s electricity, drive deep decarbonization of the grid, and employ as much as 1.5 million people—without raising electricity prices. The study’s findings call for massive and equitable deployment of clean energy sources, underscoring the Biden Administration’s efforts to tackle the climate crisis and rapidly increase access to renewable power throughout the country.

Through participation in the Better Buildings Initiative more than 900 public and private-sector organizations are driving energy efficiency in the U.S. economy. This includes 380 trillion Btus, or $3.1 billion in reported cumulative energy and cost savings. The newly released report highlights this progress in the commercial, industrial, residential and public sectors to improve energy productivity.

Through participation in the Better Buildings Initiative more than 900 public and private sector organizations have saved nearly 1.4 quadrillion British thermal units (Btus) of energy since the program began. This is a savings of nearly $8.5 billion and more than 80 million tons of CO2. Partners also have reduced their water use by more than 6.5 billion gallons.

DOE is requesting information from stakeholders on questions pertaining to Section 1605--the Buy American provisions--of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (``Recovery Act'') of 2009, Public Law 111-5. Part 1 requests technical information from stakeholders seeking to ascertain the availability of manufactured goods produced in the United States that are needed to carry out projects funded by the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. Part 2 requests information on questions pertaining to the application and implementation (programmatic questions) of the Buy American provisions in Recovery Act projects funded by the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. The DOE Building Technologies Office (BTO) has issued a request for information from the public that will inform the program development and execution of Section 40511 of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. This provision makes $225 million available to states, local governments, and partnerships through grants to help them drive the cost-effective implementation of building energy codes for improved efficiency and resilience. The positive impacts from the advancement and effective implementation of energy codes and related building energy policies in states and localities throughout the United States are significant. Model energy codes are projected to deliver $138 billion energy cost savings, 900 MMT of avoided CO2 emissions and 13.5 quads of energy in cumulative benefits to residents across the country from 2010 to 2040. Funding provided through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act will help ensure the benefits of energy codes and adjacent building energy policies are realized by American homes and businesses.

DOE is inviting interested parties to submit comments that will help to develop a National Energy Rating Program for Homes. This rating program will offer consumers easy-to-understand, reliable information about the energy performance of existing homes, and help them identify cost-effective energy efficiency investments for their homes.

The National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO) will convene the Zero-Energy Commercial Buildings Consortium in order to support the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Net-Zero Energy Commercial Building Initiative. NASEO is comprised of senior officials from the energy offices of both the states and territories, in addition to affiliates from the private and public sectors, and will provide leadership for the Consortium.

DOE has agreed to improve waste handling practices and pay $136,000 in a settlement announced today by the U.S. EPA. According to the agreement, DOE allegedly operated several dangerous waste storage units without proper permit authorization and placed waste in a landfill before treating it. Instead, DOE treated the waste after placement, a violation of existing dangerous waste regulations.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE) have released the 2011 Fuel Economy Guide, providing consumers with information about estimated mileage and fuel costs for model year 2011 vehicles. Choosing the most fuel efficient vehicle in a class will save consumers money and reduce carbon pollution.

On 30 January 2012, the Senior Executive Committee met and successfully resolved the formal dispute regarding the identification of TCE and uranium as principal threat wastes in the draft final feasibility study for the Burial Ground Operable Unit at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant. The terms of the agreement are set out in the Resolution Agreement signed by DOE, Kentucky and EPA. on 10 February 2012.

The Department of Energy (DOE) Carlsbad Field Office (CBFO) was selected for top recognition for environmental stewardship and for reducing energy, water and paper usage at the DOE's Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) recently selected CBFO for a Bronze Award under their Green Zia Environmental Leadership Program, which recognized New Mexico businesses or organizations for their commitment towards environmental stewardship by implementing pollution prevention practices and for excellence and long-term environmental and economic sustainability.

For raising awareness and addressing the impacts of climate change on America's natural resources, seven awardees were recently recognized as the first recipients of the Climate Adaption Leadership Award for Natural Resources. The new award recognizes the outstanding leadership by organizations and individuals who develop innovative approaches to prevent changes that are affecting wildlife and natural resources. The Department of the Interior established the award as part of the Administration's Priority Agenda for Enhancing the Climate Resilience of America's Natural Resources.

On 31 October 2014 the DOI released its 2014 Climate Change Adaptation Plan. The 2014 Plan focuses on the Department's work to address climate change through implementation of Executive Order 13653 and the Department's Climate Change Adaptation Policy (523 DM 1). Section II of this plan explains the Department's official Climate Change Adaptation Policy and provides additional guiding principles. Section III summarizes the Department's efforts to address climate related risks. Section IV demonstrates the Department's efforts to modernize programs to support climate resilience investment.

The United States has the potential to store a mean of 3,000 metric gigatons of carbon dioxide (CO2) in geologic basins throughout the country, according to the first-ever detailed national geologic carbon sequestration assessment released today by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). This assessment goes further than all previous assessments in considering the viability of sequestration. For example, all areas with groundwater sources that are considered freshwater by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards were eliminated from consideration for carbon storage resource potential in this assessment. For more details on the parameters of the assessments and the results, check out the website.

EPA is accepting nominations through 13 Dec. 2024, for the 2025 Green Chemistry Challenge Awards, from companies or institutions that have developed a new green chemistry process or product that helps to protect human health and the environment. Green chemistry is the design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the generation of pollution before it is created by minimizing or eliminating the hazards of chemical feedstocks, reagents, solvents and/or products. The 2025 competition has six award categories, including a category to recognize green chemistry technology and a category that debuted last year to emphasize circularity through the design of greener chemicals and materials that can be continuously reused or remanufactured - thereby reducing waste. Through these six categories, the awards help encourage American innovation and raise awareness of businesses focused on new strides in green chemistry.

WASHINGTON (October 25, 2010) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) today announced the first national standards to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improve fuel efficiency of heavy-duty trucks and buses. This comprehensive national program is projected to reduce GHG emissions by about 250 million metric tons and save 500 million barrels of oil over the lives of the vehicles produced within the program's first five years.

EPA is looking for public comment on the annual Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks: 1990-2008 draft report. This annual report is prepared by EPA in collaboration with experts from other federal agencies. After responding to public comments, the U.S. government will submit the final inventory report to the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The report will fulfill the annual requirement of the UNFCCC international treaty, ratified by the United States in 1992, which sets an overall framework for intergovernmental efforts to tackle the challenge posed by climate change.

The EPA has announced that its Draft Fiscal Year (FY) 2022-2026 EPA Strategic Plan has been published in the Federal Register and is available for public comment through 12 November 2021. The Strategic Plan communicates and provides a roadmap to achieve EPA's and the Biden-Harris Administration's priorities over the next four years. For the first time, EPA's Strategic Plan includes a strategic goal focused solely on addressing climate change and a strategic goal to advance environmental justice and civil rights. A cross-agency strategy on strengthening partnerships discusses our planned activities for early, meaningful involvement with Tribes and states and on-the-ground engagement with communities. The Draft Plan also includes a suite of measures that will help EPA monitor progress and hold the Agency accountable for achieving its priorities to protect human health and the environment.

Annual U.S. emissions for the period of time from 1990 through 2007 are summarized and presented by source category and sector. The inventory contains estimates of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFC), perfluorocarbons (PFC), and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) emissions. Comments are due April 10, 2009.

The draft 1990-2013 Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory is now available for public comment. EPA is proposing revisions to strengthen the 1988 federal underground storage tank (UST) regulations by increasing emphasis on properly operating and maintaining UST equipment.

The draft standards were released on November 19, 2009. The specification is open for public comment through January 18, 2010.

This assessment, which is done every four years, reflects data collected in 2007 from states. According to the survey results, the nation's water utilities will need to invest an estimated $334.8 billion over the next 20 years to deal with aging infrastructure. This drinking water needs survey will help EPA determine the distribution formula for Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF) grants for the fiscal years 2010 through 2013 budgets.

EPA is launching a web-based discussion forum to gather public input on how the agency can improve protection of drinking water. EPA seeks input from water professionals, advocates, and anyone interested in drinking water quality issues about best solutions for issues facing our nation's drinking water-planning, developing scientific tools, controlling water pollution and use of resources. The discussion forum will feature a series of topics based on the four segments of the drinking water strategy: addressing contaminants as groups rather than one at a time, fostering development of new technologies, using the existing authority of several statues to protect drinking water, and partnering with states to share more complete data. On July 28-29, EPA will hold a web dialogue focused on addressing contaminants as group(s). EPA welcomes your input on approaches EPA should consider when developing a framework to group contaminants. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced $19 million in new grant funding that will work to improve the climate resilience of the nation's water infrastructure. The funding available under this competitive grant opportunity will assist public water systems in underserved communities, small or disadvantaged, that are working to prepare for and reduce vulnerability to impacts from climate change ranging from extreme flooding to extreme drought.

Enforcement and Compliance History Online (ECHO) Release 2.2 has added Clean Water Act compliance data searching and detailed viewing of effluent discharge data. Plus, data downloads are updated once a week instead of annually and include more detailed Clean Water Act data than in prior versions of ECHO.

EPA has released ECHO Version 2.4, featuring updated Clean Air Act stationary source data and a tailored search interface. ECHO provides information about environmental inspections, violations, and enforcement actions for EPA-regulated facilities, like power plants, factories, and federal facilities. The information in ECHO is now updated weekly, compared to monthly in the old system.

EPA's Enforcement and Compliance History Online (ECHO) website has added a beta Air Pollutant Report and the option to search for facilities that have reported Risk Management Plans under the Clean Air Act. The Air Pollutant Report, which displays emissions data by facility from EPA's various reporting programs, is available from All Data and Air facility search results.

EPA, Office of the Chief Financial Officer is requesting comments on the development of an E-Enterprise for the Environment portal and announcing three public meetings in the form of internet webinars. The portal, a Web site that functions as a point of access to information and tools, may provide consolidated entry points for businesses and citizens to efficiently locate, obtain access to, and interact with relevant EPA, state, and tribal environmental programs and resources. The goal is to reduce regulatory burden and optimize information technology resources across government entities. EPA is seeking comment on the value of establishing a portal and the functions that it should provide. The Annual Energy Outlook 2013 (AEO2013) Reference case has been released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). The report presents updated projections for U.S. energy markets through 2040. These projections include only the effects of policies that have been implemented in law or final regulations.

Eielson Air Force Base near Fairbanks mismanaged hazardous waste at its facilities and failed to ensure that personnel handling hazardous waste had proper training, according to a settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The base agreed to pay a penalty for alleged violations of federal hazardous waste management laws, correct the violations and improve its waste management and training practices.

Eleven Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states will cooperate to develop a regional Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS). The 11 states-the 10 members of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) plus Pennsylvania-will work together to create an emissions-performance standard that will eventually provide incentives for energy providers to use lower-carbon fuels.

Contaminant cleanup at Elmendorf AFB began in 1990 when the AFB was added to the National Priorities List under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980. The cleanup continues and associated documentation is available for public review.

DOT will be leading a multi-agency public outreach and education campaign to encourage federal agencies to choose sustainable locations for future facilities.

The Department of Defense and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service collaborated to produce the fall 2015 Wildlife Stewardship & National Defense issue of the Endangered Species Bulletin (ESB). This issue focuses on DoD's projects that sustain the military mission while protecting and managing endangered, threatened, and candidate species.

Leaders from the U.S. DOE and the U.S. DHS recently signed a MOU to collaborate in a strategic partnership to advance federal critical infrastructure resilience. The partnership will result in the development and implementation of a systematic approach to planning and deploying projects and measures that will help reduce DHS energy use while strengthening the resilience and security of their facilities. This partnership will address continuity of operations, energy and water efficiency in buildings, mobile/transportation assets, and information technologies and facilities. The partnership will permit the development of an agency-wide resilience framework and support implementation of the plan at DHS pilot sites. FEMP's long term goal for the partnership is to develop an integrated enterprise-wide system approach that all federal agencies can use to achieve their energy resilience and security missions by optimizing their facility operations and security, enhancing grid reliability, and conserving energy and water.

DOE, DOC, DoD, and Department of State launched the Federal Consortium for Advanced Batteries (FCAB) to accelerate the development of a robust, secure, domestic industrial base for advanced batteries. The Consortium provides a framework for cooperation and coordination among federal agencies having a stake in developing advanced battery technology and establishing a domestic supply of lithium batteries.

DOE is funding nine projects that will advance the development of combined heat and power (CHP) and renewable energy technologies at facilities across the federal government and help meet energy efficiency, renewable energy, and greenhouse gas reduction goals. As the nation's largest single user of energy, the federal government is leading by example. These projects will reduce carbon emissions, while strengthening America's economic, energy, and environmental security. Projects are being implemented at NASA, Army, National Science Foundation, Agriculture, Justice, Interior, Air National Guard, and Transportation facilities.

The Energy Department today recognized 25 winners across the federal government as recipients of the 2014 Federal Energy and Water Management Awards. These annual awards highlight exceptional federal agency efforts for improving the nation's energy, water, aviation and vehicle fleets. Each winner deployed cutting-edge practices that will significantly cut carbon pollution, protect the environment and strengthen national security.

The U.S Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) intends to issue a funding opportunity to strengthen energy and water infrastructure across federal agencies. Projects will improve the energy efficiency of federal operations while stimulating economic development and creating jobs in construction, building trades, and other sectors.

The Energy Department has announced that the General Services Administration's (GSA) United States Court House in Wichita, Kansas is the winner of the 2013 Better Buildings Federal Award. The Better Buildings Federal Award challenges agencies to achieve the greatest reduction in annual energy intensity, or energy consumed per gross square foot. This year's winner cut its energy intensity by 20% and saved over $40,000 in utility costs in the 12 month competition period.

Supporting the Obama Administration's goal to reduce carbon emissions and protect the environment, the Energy Department is pursuing a suite of initiatives to strengthen federal energy management through increased focus on measurement of energy use in federal buildings and energy efficient building design. Principal among the efforts is the Department's issuance of a final rule that requires verified energy and water performance for new and retrofitted federal buildings that are certified by private sector green building certification systems. The rule, which goes into effect Nov. 13, ensures that in cases where agencies choose to use green building certification systems to meet federal sustainability and energy standards, they must choose a system that verifies enhanced energy and water efficiency. By requiring re-assessments at least every four years, the rule will ensure energy and water savings continue well beyond the initial building opening or retrofit. System requirements for the verification of energy and water performance in new construction and major renovations will lead to reduced consumption through active energy and water management.

The Apps for Energy II contest, which is the second contest in the year-long American Energy Data Challenge, will encourage contestants to leverage ideas developed during the American Energy Data Challenge's first contest, and to use open data sources. As part of the contest, the Energy Department will host a series of "hackathons" in four cities to create venues where people can brainstorm, collaborate, and begin creating apps that use publicly-available data to solve problems. The hackathons will be in Washington, D.C., January 24-25; San Diego, California, January 31-February 1; Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, February 7-8; and Boston, Massachusetts, Feb. 15-16. Contestants will be eligible to win prizes at the events and by submitting their apps for judging as part of the nationwide contest.

DOE has published a new series of protocols for determining savings from energy efficiency upgrades in homes, commercial buildings, and industrial facilities. Developed in close collaboration with the nation's leading technical experts under the Uniform Methods Project, these protocols offer a straightforward approach for calculating energy savings made possible from common residential and commercial efficiency measures in utility-based energy efficiency programs.

(WASHINGTON, September 24, 2013) - The Energy Department announced today that it has received a 2013 Green Power Leadership Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The annual awards recognize the country's leading green power consumers for their commitment and contribution to helping advance the development of the nation's voluntary green power market. EPA presented the Energy Department with the award at an event held in conjunction with the 2013 Renewable Energy Markets Conference in Austin, Texas, on September 23, 2013.

In support of the President's all-of-the-above energy strategy to diversify our nation's power supplies, the Energy Department today released a new report looking at the future of wind power through 2050 and the economic benefits that come with a robust wind industry. The report, "Wind Vision: A New Era for Wind Power in the United States", confirms that with technological advancements driving projected cost reductions, in combination with continued siting and transmission development, wind power can be economically deployed to provide renewable power in all 50 states.

(August 11, 2015) - According to two reports released today by the Energy Department, the U.S. wind energy industry continued growing at an impressive rate in 2014, further solidifying America's position as a global leader in wind energy. Wind power is a key component of the President's all-of-the-above energy strategy and Clean Power Plan to reduce climate-changing carbon pollution, diversify our energy economy, and boost America's economic competitiveness by bringing innovative technologies online. With rapidly increasing wind energy generation, fast-growing demand, and steadily decreasing wind energy prices--the lowest ever seen in the United States-- the U.S. wind energy market remains strong.

DOE unlocked billions of dollars in private capital to improve the efficiency and sustainability of federal facilities. DOE competitively awarded contracts to 20 energy service companies (ESCOs) to provide Energy Savings Performance Contracts (ESPCs) for federal agencies, marking the fourth generation of such contracts awarded by DOE since 1998. Energy and water infrastructure projects financed through DOE's ESPC indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract offer guaranteed cost savings for federal sites. With a ceiling of $5 billion per ESCO contract, they require no upfront government funding and are designed to pay for themselves over time. Federal agencies interested in initiating their next ESPC project are encouraged to contact the Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) to get started. Stakeholders, including federal agencies, ESCOs, and the public can visit FEMP's ESPC program page to view the awarded contracts and access further information about ESPCs

Federal agencies are required to purchase energy-efficient products. To help buyers meet these requirements, FEMP maintains acquisition guidance product categories, covered by various efficiency programs. In August 2016 the following categories were updated: various types of boilers, various types of water heaters, and light commercial heating and cooling equipment.

WASHINGTON – (August 16, 2021) Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is announcing expanded efforts to drive energy efficiency improvements among U.S. data centers. Through its ENERGY STAR program, EPA has launched an updated specification for ENERGY STAR certification of data storage products, unveiled a brand-new website experience designed to serve as the go-to place for data center energy efficiency resources, and will be updating its 1-100 ENERGY STAR score for data centers.

U.S. carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels decreased by 2.8 percent in 2008, from 5,967 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MMTCO2) in 2007 to 5,802 MMTCO2 in 2008, according to preliminary estimates released by the Energy Information Administration (EIA). This is the largest annual decline in energy-related carbon dioxide emissions since EIA began annual reporting on greenhouse gas emissions.

Assisting Federal Facilities with Energy Conservation Technologies (AFFECT) 2017 will provide grants to federal agencies for projects in three topic areas: (1) Combined Heat and Power, (2) Renewable Energy and (3) Energy Efficiency Deep Retrofits. Applicants will be asked to show how the proposed project results are conducive to broader adoption at other Federal facilities, impacting the direction, strategy, and thinking of the agency to engage in similar efforts. The anticipated total funding level for AFFECT 2017 is $3.0 million, subject to appropriations, with anticipated funding per award to be between approximately $100,000 and $1.0 million. Letters of intent (LOI) are due by 22 December 2016, and full applications are due by 30 January 2017. Applicants must submit a LOI to be eligible to submit a full application. During fiscal year (FY) 2022, EPA's enforcement and compliance program continued its mission to target the most serious water, air, land, and chemical violations and hazards that impact communities across the country. Their work reduced, treated or eliminated 95 million pounds of pollutants, and required violators to pay over $300 million in penalties fines and restitution. Our primary focus was advancing environmental justice (EJ), rebuilding EPA's national inspector corps, and working to mitigate the effects of climate change, particularly in communities overburdened by pollution. EPAs FY 2022 accomplishments focused on protecting vulnerable communities using the full range of compliance monitoring and enforcement tools, including inspections, technical assistance supported by advanced technologies, and early actions and innovative remedies to ensure high levels of compliance with federal environmental laws and regulations.

This release features the addition of Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (hazardous waste) and EPA Civil Enforcement Case compliance data searching. The Hazardous Waste Facility search offers detailed program-specific search options to find hazardous waste handlers of interest. The EPA Civil Enforcement Case Search allows users to search for specific EPA civil cases based on a number of criteria like statute and case milestone, making it much easier to obtain a list of cases of interest with corresponding summary data. EPA also has upgraded the popular Clean Water Act Effluent Charts to provide more download capabilities.

GSA established the Achievement Award for Real Property Innovation to motivate federal agencies to improve real property management. The program recognizes an agency's success and communicates cutting-edge ideas to agencies striving to improve their real property asset management. GSA focuses on three topic areas for the award program: Asset Management, Sustainability, and Workplace Innovation. Applications are due 21 July 2010.

Developed by EPA in cooperation with multiple Federal agencies, this is a web-based interactive tool that integrates over 300 separate data layers, helps decision makers understand the implications of planning and policy decisions on our fragile ecosystems and the communities who depend on goods and services from these ecosystems. EnviroAtlas is designed for people from all levels of government, professionals, researchers, educators, non-governmental organizations, and anyone interested in considering the benefits or impacts of a decision, such as siting a new road or city park. EnviroAtlas uses seven broad benefit categories to organize its information and data on ecosystem services: Clean Air, Clean and Plentiful Water, Natural Hazard Mitigation, Climate Stabilization, Recreation, Culture and Aesthetics, Food, Fuel and Materials, and Biodiversity Conservation.

A free online supplement to the American Journal of Public Health (AJPH) is a compilation of articles demonstrating the advancement and evolving sophistication of environmental and occupational justice work, and the use of community-based participatory research approaches over the past decade. This edition of the America Journal of Public Health is supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The supplement was supported by the three federal partners and the University of Massachusetts Lowell.

Reports are available from 7 Federal agencies concerning the restoration and protection of the Chesapeake Bay. Public comment on these reports is requested. The reports were prepared pursuant to Executive Order (E.O.) 13508 of May 12, 2009, Chesapeake Bay Protection and Restoration. The E.O. required that a draft strategy be published for public review and comments together with the final reports prepared by the federal agencies. The draft strategy was made available on 9 November 2008 for comment. Comments on the seven Section 202 reports must be submitted on or before 8 January 2010.

The Office of Federal Sustainability has posted a website with resources related to the implementation of EO 13834.

EPA announced an update to its Drinking Water Treatability Database with new treatment options and scientific references for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The database update will further help states, tribes, and local governments, as well as water utilities, make better decisions to manage PFAS in their communities.

EPA announced the automatic addition of nine per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances to the list of chemicals covered by the Toxics Release Inventory. TRI data is reported to EPA annually by facilities in designated industry sectors and federal facilities that manufacture, process, or otherwise use TRI-listed chemicals above set quantities. The data include quantities of such chemicals that were released into the environment or otherwise managed as waste. Information collected through TRI allows communities to learn how facilities in their area are managing listed chemicals. The data collected is available online and helps to support informed decision-making by companies, government agencies, non-governmental organizations and the public. Adding new chemicals to the TRI advances the Administration's environmental justice commitments by improving accountability and transparency for families, workers, and communities across the country.

EPA updated the Safer Chemical Ingredients List (SCIL), a living list of chemicals organized by functional-use class that EPA's Safer Choice program has evaluated and determined meet Safer Choice criteria. This update is part of an effort to expand and maintain the SCIL. With this update, there are a total of 1,064 chemicals listed on the SCIL. In this update, EPA added nine chemicals to the SCIL. To expand the number of chemicals and functional-use categories on the SCIL, EPA encourages manufacturers to submit their safer chemicals to EPA for review and listing on the SCIL. The addition of chemicals to the SCIL incentivizes further innovation in safer chemistry, which can promote environmental justice, bolster resilience to the impacts of climate change, and improve water quality. Chemicals on the SCIL are among the safest for their functional use.
