The American Meteorological Society has released the State of the Climate Report for 2014. The report, compiled by NOAA's Center for Weather and Climate at the National Centers for Environmental Information, is based on contributions from 413 scientists from 58 countries around the world. The report provides a detailed update on global climate indicators, notable weather events, and other data collected by environmental monitoring stations and instruments located on land, water, ice, and in space. In 2014, the most essential indicators of Earth's changing climate continued to reflect trends of a warming planet, with several markers such as rising land and ocean temperature, sea levels and greenhouse gases setting new records.

EPA posted a new Inspection Report Template and Corrective Action Report Form for construction operators to use in preparing their inspection and corrective action reports for EPA's 2012 Construction General Permit (CGP). These forms enable operators to meet the minimum inspection and corrective action reporting requirements in the permit, and can be customized to the needs of the site. These forms may also be helpful for operators covered under a state CGP, but may need to be modified to meet the specific requirements of that permit.

Innovators including start-ups, designers, buildings scientists, students, and other big thinkers can use the website to share ideas that could develop into new energy efficient technologies for homes and buildings. Those interested in participating can register through the ORNL Buildings Crowdsourcing Community or they can vote on their favorite entries. The best ideas will be recognized during the Energy Department's Building Technologies Office Industry Day hosted at ORNL headquarters in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, in September 2015.

The information from the survey provides important input for EPA and others to use in evaluating biosolids generated by the nation's publicly owned treatment works (POTWs). The report also provides the first national estimates of which pharmaceuticals, steroids and hormones may be present in sewage sludge and at what concentrations.

The EPA has decided to terminate the National Environmental Performance Track Program effective May 14, 2009.

In March 2011, EPA issued the Second Prospective Report which looked at the results of the Clean AirAct from 1990 to 2020. According to this study, the direct benefits from the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments are estimated to reach almost $2 trillion for the year 2020, a figure that dwarfs the direct costs of implementation ($65 billion).

The Corps Environment is an online quarterly news magazine published by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and is intended to provide information about USACE and Army environmental initiatives, policies and technologies. The Department of Defense (DoD) announced the Secretary of Defense Environmental Awards winners for 2022. The awards recognize installations, teams, and individuals for their accomplishments in innovative and cost-effective environmental management strategies supporting mission readiness. Each year since 1962, the Secretary of Defense Environmental Awards have honored service members and civilians across DoD. The nominees' achievements include significant strides to conserve our Nation's natural and cultural resources; protect human health; prevent or eliminate pollution at the source; clean up hazardous substances, pollutants or contaminants, and munitions on DoD sites; and incorporate environmental requirements into weapon systems acquisition. DoD also leverages technology to develop innovative solutions to existing and emerging human health and environmental challenges. In 2022, DoD selected the following 9 winners from a total of 26 nominees.

The Department of Defense (DoD) announced the nine winners of the 2023 Secretary of Defense Environmental Awards. The awards have honored installations, teams, and individuals each year since 1962 for outstanding achievements in DoD environmental programs. These accomplishments include outstanding conservation activities, innovative environmental practices, and partnerships that improve quality of life and promote efficiencies without compromising DoD's mission success.

Program will close on 1 June 2021.Approximately 100 projects under the EJSG program for up to $75,000 for one-year projects and 46 EJCPS projects for up to $200,000 for two-year projects can potentially be awarded nationwide. Potential additional funding is specifically targeted for additional air quality and safe drinking water workforce training projects and will be added to the approximately $6 million of EJ funding detailed in the original funding announcements. Applicants interested in either funding opportunity must submit grant proposal packages by 1 June 2021 to be considered for the available funding. Applicants should plan for projects to begin on 1 October 2021.

The Green Electronics Council (GEC), the organization that manages the EPEAT ecolabel, recognized the 2019 EPEAT Purchaser Award winners at an evening celebration held on May 22nd in Portland, Oregon. Fifty-nine organizations, including cities, states, US Federal agencies and companies from around the globe were honored for their decision to purchase sustainable IT products.

IMO has accepted the proposal to designate waters off the North American coasts as an Emission Control Area (ECA). Large ships that operate in ECAs must use dramatically cleaner fuel and technology, leading to major air quality and public health benefits that extend hundreds of miles inland.

The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer will celebrate its 25th anniversary on 16 September. The Protocol, which was ratified by 197 countries, has enabled reductions of over 98 per cent of all global production and consumption of controlled ozone-depleting substances.

Every March, the NDCEE program requests that DoD personnel submit proposals of mature technology solutions and processes that address high-priority environmental, safety, occupational health, energy, and climate change challenges. Proposals should enhance readiness, meet sustainability goals, and support warfighters at home and abroad for the DoD. Selected proposals demonstrate, validate and transition commercially available off-the-shelf and recent laboratory innovations for military application at DoD installations. Once the technology has proven to work in its final form and under expected conditions, they are transitioned to the Services, and other federal agencies. NDCEE accepts proposals from academia, private industry, and non-DoD government agencies. However, a DoD agency must serve as the project lead and assist in acquiring a transition partner to ensure the technology is available to the warfighter as quickly as possible.

The SECARMY Environmental Awards Program recognizes outstanding performance and excellence in environmental stewardship and sustainability by Army installations, teams, and individuals. The awards emphasize innovation and accomplishments in sustainable practice, installation environmental management, and community enhancement. The period of performance for these awards is 01 October 2018 through 30 September 2020.

The goal of these reports is to provide a guide to a private sector-led, industry-wide decarbonization effort that is deeper and faster than it would otherwise be and that directly benefits fenceline communities by emphasizing environmental justice and the creation of good jobs. Key highlights from the reports: 1) The pressing need for deep decarbonization in carbon-intensive industrial sectors. 2) Current U.S. industrial strategies risk falling behind net-zero targets. 3) Potential pathways for industries to remain on track with decarbonization targets. 4) A call to action for significant capital investment and robust technological adaptation across sectors. The release of these reports underscores the DOE's commitment to providing actionable insights and strategies to drive the U.S. towards a more sustainable industrial future.

This program enables Federal employees from across government to submit their ideas for efficiencies and savings as part of the annual budget process. Federal sustainability improvements often result in considerable savings and should be shared government-wide. By offering suggestions regarding environmental and energy improvements to operational elements of federal facilities, federal employees can help improve efficiency and save money.

The Southern Region Review, published by the U.S. Army's Regional Environmental and Energy Office--Southern (REEO-S), is designed to provide current information to environmental decision makers, planners, and program managers regarding environmental actions and events throughout Federal EPA Region 4 (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee). Information listed may be relevant to the U.S. Army and other Military Services' activities and operations.

Pilot projects are being sought for the Sustainable Sites Initiative Rating System, released on November 5, 2009. Accepted pilot projects will be the first projects to demonstrate their application of The Sustainable Sites Initiative: Guidelines and Performance Benchmarks 2009. Feedback will be used to revise the rating system and inform the technical reference manual. Projects may only be submitted online through February 15, 2010.

This tool (TTX Tool) introduces users to the potential impacts of climate change on the water sector within the context of an all-hazards approach to emergency preparedness and response. The 15 scenarios in the tool include natural hazards, man-made incidents, and potential climate change impacts. Five climate change-related scenarios provide an opportunity for utilities to consider and implement long-term planning measures in order to mitigate the potential impacts of climate change.

This partnership promotes enhanced technical cooperation on chemical management activities. ECHA is the agency that implements the European Union's chemical management program known as REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals). The partnership puts in place a process for working together on a range of issues of mutual interest including toxicity testing, the hazard and risk assessment of chemicals, risk management tools, scientific collaboration, and information exchange.

Developed by National Climate Assessment and Development Advisory Committee (NCADAC), the full report of the National Climate Assessment provides an in-depth look at climate change impacts on the U.S. It details the multitude of ways climate change is already affecting and will increasingly affect the lives of Americans. The report is available to download and can be explored interactively through USGCRP's website.

EPA and the U.S. Department of the Army (the agencies) announced a final rule amending the 2023 definition of "waters of the United States" to conform with the recent Supreme Court decision in Sackett v. EPA. The agencies are committed to following the law and implementing the Clean Water Act to deliver the essential protections that safeguard the nation's waters from pollution and degradation. This action provides the clarity that is needed to advance these goals, while moving forward with infrastructure projects, economic opportunities, and agricultural activities. The Supreme Court's Decision in Sackett v. EPA, issued on 25 May 2023, created uncertainty for Clean Water Act implementation. The agencies are issuing this amendment to the 2023 rule expeditiously--three months after the Supreme Court decision--to provide clarity and a path forward consistent with the ruling. With this action, the Army Corps of Engineers will resume issuing all jurisdictional determinations. Because the sole purpose of this rule is to amend specific provisions of the 2023 Rule that are invalid under Sackett, the rule will take effect immediately.

This data is searchable by NAICS code or general industry classification as well as by state and year of the reports. The search results enable users to: identify the P2 measures that were most effective for a given industry or chemical; compare waste management practices of facilities within a sector; and view trends in waste management practices for any given facility over several years.

The release includes raw data that accounts for 80 to 85 percent of the total data that will be included in the TRI National Analysis in December 2009. EPA has provided the preliminary data in three ways. First, a Facility Locator Tool allows you to access facility-specific information regarding TRI Section 313 chemicals in your community. Second, EPA has provided basic data files that are available for download and include 100 of the most commonly requested data fields. Third, EPA has offered basic plus data, a set of seven downloadable files containing all data submitted to EPA by covered facilities. EPA is continuing to process paper submissions and late submissions and resolve electronic filing issues; they intend to incorporate these additional datasets in September and again in October.

On 22 June 2016 President Obama signed Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act which amends the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). According to EPA, this is the first major update to an environmental statute in 20 years. Check out the website for a copy of the Act, a summary of key provisions, and a Q&A. OMB and the Recovery, Accountability and Transparency Board announce that webinars will be held the week of July 20,2009 to provide information on implementing the guidance set forth in OMB Memorandum M-09-21, Implementing Guidance for the Reports on Use of Funds Pursuant to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 that was released on June 22, 2009

The Tribal Green Building Toolkit provides information on how tribes and other communities can prioritize and implement green building codes, policies and practices. This toolkit summarizes priorities identified by the Tribal Green Building Codes Workgroup, a group of tribal and federal leaders working to advance tribal green building. The toolkit includes checklists and tribal case studies to support tribes, which are not covered by state or local government building codes, to adopt or adapt green building codes or other policies that meet tribal environmental, cultural and economic priorities.

The TRI-MEWeb Online Reporting System as well as the Reporting Year (RY) 2013 TRI Reporting Forms & Instructions manual are now available. Effective January 21, 2014, facilities must use TRI-MEweb to submit TRI reporting forms to EPA (except for trade secret information, which facilities will still complete on paper). Facilities must submit TRI forms for RY 2013 by July 1, 2014.

To reduce the rate of significant noncompliance with National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits at lagoon facilities, improve water quality, and protect environmental and public health, the EPA has developed this troubleshooting manual. Specifically, this manual is designed to help operators at small wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) lagoons, also called wastewater stabilization ponds, identify causes of lagoon upset conditions and the corresponding troubleshooting steps.

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) have received USDA's Excellence in BioPreferred Procurement Awards for Fiscal Year 2018 for testing and adopting biobased products within their operations. The U.S. Air Force and the U.S. EPA ranked number 11 and 14 respectively in the updated list of Green Power Partners.

These advice letter summarizes the recommendations of the Green Building Advisory Committee and are based on the third phase of work of its Federal Building Decarbonization Task Group (FBDTG) and the diligent efforts of its Green Leasing Task Group (GLTG). The letters are titled: Federal Building Decarbonization: Integrated Electrification Solutions and Recommendations for Achieving EO 14057 Green Lease Targets.

The U.S. Air Force has agreed to pay a $12,823 penalty for Underground Storage Tank (UST) violations in three Nebraska counties. The violations occurred at Air Force facilities in western Nebraska. In addition to paying the civil penalty, the Air Force is required to conduct a tank tightness test to determine if one of the USTs is leaking. The Air Force is unable to account for 1,490 gallons of diesel fuel in that tank. According to an administrative consent agreement and final order filed by EPA Region 7 in Kansas City, Kan., routine inspections of the facilities discovered the violations, some of which were repeat violations. The violations included failure to provide overfill protection for an existing tank, failure to conduct annual inspections of the corrosion protection system, and failure to report a suspected release to the implementing agency. By agreeing to the settlement with EPA, the United States Air Force has certified that it is now in compliance with all requirements of the RCRA regulations.

On January 28, 2015, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released to the public a report detailing the results of a two-year study to address coastal storm and flood risk to vulnerable populations, property, ecosystems, and infrastructure in the North Atlantic region of the United States affected by Hurricane Sandy in October, 2012. Congress authorized this report in January 2013 in the Disaster Relief Appropriations Act of 2013 (Public Law 113-2). The report, known as the North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study (NACCS), brought together experts from Federal, state, and local government agencies, as well as non-governmental organizations and academia, to assess the flood risks facing coastal communities and ecosystems and collaboratively develop a coastal storm risk management framework to address increasing risks, which are driven in part by increased frequency and intensity of storm events and rising sea levels due to a changing climate. The NACCS provides tools and information, including a nine-step Coastal Storm Risk Management Framework that can be used by communities, states, tribes, and the Federal government to help identify coastal risk and develop strategies for reducing those risks.

The U.S. Army Fort Hood has partnered again with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by setting new goals to recycle lead batteries, reduce or eliminate lead wheel weights, and recycle lead projectiles throughout the base's various operations.

In this action, EPA and the Army jointly conclude that multiple substantive and procedural errors warrant a repeal of the 2015 Rule. With this final repeal, the agencies will implement the pre-2015 regulations, which are currently in place in more than half of the states, informed by applicable agency guidance documents and consistent with Supreme Court decisions and longstanding agency practice. The final rule takes effect 60 days after publication in the Federal Register. In December 2018, EPA and the Army proposed a new definition--Step 2--that would clearly define where federal jurisdiction begins and ends in accordance with the Clean Water Act and Supreme Court precedent. In the proposal, the agencies provide a clear definition of the difference between federally regulated waterways and those waters that rightfully remain solely under state authority.

As part of the Obama Administration's Climate Data Initiative, a new set of online climate data resources was announced to help with climate change planning, adaptation and management. The U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit is a website developed by NOAA and other Federal agencies that will enable decision-makers to take action. The toolkit will boost climate resiliency by using data-driven tools, information and subject-matter expertise. This also offers information from across the Federal government in one easy-to-use location so that Americans are better able to understand the climate-related risks and opportunities impacting their communities, which will enable them to make smarter decisions to improve their resilience. The Toolkit will also be updated with climate impact information specific to tribal nations.

The U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit's Water Resources topic area is now live. Explore climate-related risks and opportunities related to municipal water supplies, flooding, drought, and water-related ecosystems. You'll also find tools and case studies to help manage water-related climate risk and build resilience.

DOE in partnership with the National Alliance for Water Innovation (NAWI), announced a $6.5 million request for proposals (RFP) to develop new technologies for purifying non-traditional water sources. The advancements in desalination technologies will help propel the modernization of America's water infrastructure, increase access to clean, potable water and move the country towards net-zero emissions by 2050.

The U.S. Department of Energy announced $8 million in funding to support projects that will improve the flexibility of the U.S. hydropower fleet and enhance electric grid reliability. Hydropower is a flexible resource, meaning it can supply electricity immediately or store it to meet real-time demand. By improving flexibility, these projects will strengthen hydropower's ability to support an evolving electric grid that includes an increasing amount of variable renewable energy sources.

The DOE announced a $96 million funding opportunity to support decarbonizing the domestic transportation sector. The funding will focus on expanding electric vehicle (EV) charging accessibility, create cleaner non-road vehicles through electrification and the use of alternative fuels, and develop electric drive components and materials to maximize EV efficiency and affordability. Non-road vehicles, including agricultural and construction equipment, rail, marine and aviation, are a major source of pollution, emitting more carbon pollution than any other sector of the U.S. economy. Lowering vehicle emissions will support President Biden's goal to achieve to net-zero economy by 2050. Further, in accordance with President Biden's Justice40 Initiative, applicants for this funding must show how proposed projects will benefit traditionally disadvantaged communities that lack access to clean energy sources.

The DOE awarded $3.6 million to 18 groups and organizations through the Inclusive Energy Innovation Prize -- a first-of-its-kind competition designed to support entrepreneurship and innovation in communities historically underserved in federal climate and energy technology funding. The selected projects are helping develop the next wave of diverse clean energy business owners, executives and workforce that are creating bottom-up solutions for sustainable development. The Inclusive Energy Innovation Prize supports the Biden-Harris Administration's Justice40 initiative to put environmental and economic justice at the center of America's transition to a net-zero economy by 2050.

U.S. Secretary of Energy and U.S. Secretary of Transportation signed a memorandum of understanding to create a Joint Office of Energy and Transportation to support the deployment of $7.5 billion from the President’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to build out a national electric vehicle charging network that can build public confidence, with a focus on filling gaps in rural, disadvantaged, and hard-to-reach locations. This is a critical component of the President’s plan to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles, address the climate crisis and support domestic manufacturing jobs. President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law directs both agencies to collaborate on new programs and initiatives, including the new joint office, that will support the transition of the nation’s transportation systems, which currently accounts for 29% of all U.S. carbon pollution, to electric vehicles and other zero-carbon technologies.
