3D Vegetation Characterization for Fire Behavior Modeling (Web-based)
The two presentations describe complementary efforts to improve prescribed fire planning on military installations through advanced 3D modeling tools. The FuelsCraft project focuses on developing detailed, voxel-based representations of wildland fuels using LiDAR, photogrammetry, and field data to better simulate fire behavior and smoke, while also building scalable digital "fuel libraries" for different vegetation types. In parallel, the FastFuels and QUIC-Fire tool suite provides a web-based platform that integrates high-resolution 3D fuel data, machine learning, and physics-based fire modeling to simulate fire scenarios, evaluate management strategies, and support decision-making. Together, these innovations move beyond traditional 2D approaches, offering more precise, site-specific insights to enhance wildfire risk reduction, prescribed burn effectiveness, and ecosystem management across Department of Defense lands.
