PFAS Destruction in AFFF-Impacted Excavated Sediments at Schriever Air Force Base (Web-based)
The two webinars present complementary, field-demonstrated approaches for treating PFAS-impacted solid media at Schriever Space Force Base. The indirect thermal desorption/thermal oxidation (ITD/TO) demonstration used a mobile, batch-fed system with filtration, high-temperature oxidation, and quenching to treat 25 drums of PFAS-impacted material while tracking PFAS destruction and the overall fluorine mass balance; the results showed that the technology can reliably treat highly contaminated material in the field, reduce reliance on offsite disposal, and potentially lower long-term Department of War liabilities. The electron beam (eBeam) demonstration explored a chemical-free destructive treatment in which high-energy electrons interact with moisture in sediments to generate reactive species that break down PFAS; prior treatability testing achieved greater than 99.9% PFAS destruction at a 2,000-kGy dose, and the Schriever demonstration focused on evaluating the technology under field conditions. Together, the webinars highlight two potentially scalable, destructive alternatives to conventional PFAS disposal--thermal treatment through ITD/TO and irradiation through eBeam--with an emphasis on achieving high PFAS destruction, managing treatment byproducts, demonstrating field deployability, and building confidence in technologies that can reduce the long-term environmental and financial liabilities associated with PFAS-impacted soils and sediments.
