Innovative Approaches to Resolving Coastal Resilience Data Gaps Worldwide (Web-based)
Together, these presentations address two critical challenges facing coastal and estuarine Department of War (DoW) installations: improving the accuracy of sea-level information for risk assessment and reducing corrosion associated with coastal environments. The first presentation titled "Improving Sea-Level Information at DoW Sites for Risk Assessments Using Hybrid Modeling and Data-Fusion (ISIDoW)" presents a holistic approach for improving the Defense Regional Sea Level database by combining remote sensing, in situ observations, and physical and empirical modeling to hindcast sea levels, tidal datums, and extreme water levels at locations where direct tide-gauge data are unavailable, thereby reducing uncertainties in coastal risk assessments. The second presentation titled "Corrosion Validation of Engineering Solutions for Sea Spray Aerosol Control" focuses on integrating sea-spray aerosol considerations into the design of coastal protection measures such as breakwaters and nature-based structures, using aerosol transport and deposition modeling and experimental validation to identify engineering solutions that can reduce corrosive exposure and achieve meaningful improvements in corrosion severity.
