Car Wash Image

General Description

The removal of dirt and other residues from a vehicle. This may be done with a hose and rag or a formal washrack.

Summary of Federal Requirements

Wastewaters from floor washdown and car washes have been permitted to discharge to municipal sanitary sewer systems if they are pretreated for oil and grit removal. See Wastewater Treatment Facilities -> Discharges to POTW/FOTW for more information. However, little is known about the impacts of these discharges to septic systems and ground water.

In other cases, the wastewater from the vehicle washdown is discharged into an oil/water separator prior to being discharged to the environment. See Wastewater Treatment Facilities -> Point Source Discharges for more information.
